Laboratory Medicine Case Conference
Fellows regularly present educational clinical microbiology consultative material at the weekly Laboratory Medicine Case Conference. Presentations emphasize diagnostic reasoning, test interpretation, limitations of methodologies, and clinical impact, and are tailored to a multidisciplinary laboratory medicine audience.

Clinical Microbiology Plate Rounds
Fellows play a leading role in the organization and conduct of clinical microbiology BIDMC plate rounds, which are held every other week. In collaboration with attending faculty, fellows help determine the material to be presented and assist clinical microbiology residents in structuring and refining their presentations.

Fellows:
  • Present cases themselves
  • Serve as senior discussants
  • Act as a backup resource for less experienced residents
  • Provide real-time interpretive guidance during discussion
Plate rounds focus on organism identification, clinical correlation, and diagnostic problem-solving. Fellows present pediatric microbiology cases during their Boston Children’s Hospital rotations; however, plate rounds at BIDMC and Boston Children’s Hospital are conducted separately within each institution.

Infectious Disease Case Conference and Immunocompromised Host Conference
These BIDMC clinical management conferences address complex patient care scenarios in which microbiology diagnostics play a central role. Fellows participate actively by:
  • Commenting on diagnostic testing strategies and test performance characteristics (sensitivity, specificity, predictive value)
  • Discussing alternative testing approaches and methodological limitations
  • Providing interpretive input to inform clinical decision-making
As appropriate, fellows present focused material using brief PowerPoint presentations. Fellows are also encouraged to participate in the weekly intercity infectious diseases conference, which brings together infectious disease clinicians and trainees from institutions across Boston and the surrounding region.

Clinical Microbiology Administrative Meeting
Fellows participate as members of the clinical microbiology leadership team in the weekly laboratory administrative meeting, contributing to discussions of laboratory operations, quality assurance, workflow optimization, and test utilization alongside attending physicians, lead technologists, and laboratory management.

Pathology Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) Conference
Fellows attend the weekly Pathology Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) conference, where diagnostic errors, near misses, and quality improvement opportunities are reviewed using root cause analysis. Fellows participate in discussions and presentations as appropriate for cases involving clinical microbiology diagnostics, reinforcing principles of patient safety and continuous quality improvement.
